Wexford Arts Centre and Arts Ability, CUMAS New Ross are delighted to present two solo exhibitions of painting work; One Woman by Marie Holohan and Circles in the Sky by Andrew Murphy. The exhibitions will run from 19th March to 9th April at Wexford Arts Centre.
Marie Holohan is a founding member of the Arts Ability Studio group at CUMAS. A meticulous painter, Marie’s work features surreal patterns and vibrant colours to create vivid, detailed paintings which build highly imaginative and dreamlike landscapes. The starting point for these paintings is usually a photographic image, but this is quickly discarded and her natural creativity leads her to depict vivid landscapes and strange new realities. Using acrylic on canvas, Marie’s primary concern is colour which she applies in controlled, linear patterns that lead the eyethrough the painting, tracing the dimensions of her created worlds. Marie fearlessly directs these colours, and although her application is controlled and precise, the work remains incredibly free and unforced, which serves to highlight her paint handling skills.
Andrew Murphy works on large-scale abstract compositions. Hisexpressive paintings feature vigorously applied layers of colour on colour, giving the works a great sense of depth and texture. His recurring circular motif creates drama, movement and becomes almost meditative on close observation. Moving between light and darkness, vibrant and muted tones, his work reflects a range of emotions; the artist’s expression remaining clearly visible in each. Working directly from his imagination, Andrew’s bold use of colour is complemented by his confident, expressive and gestural approach leading him to a natural conclusion with each painting.
Arts Ability is a partnership initiative between Wexford County Council, HSE South, The Arts Council and CUMAS, which aims at providing inclusive opportunities for people to Celebrate Creativity and develop their art practice in a professional manner. The programme is designed to facilitate the individual’s creative development and to encourage each participant to follow their personal projects. The initiative ensures that each participant has access to quality materials coupled with technical support geared towards the individual’s needs. CUMAS New Ross is committed to providing quality support to individuals with an intellectual disability through the under-pinning principle of “individualization towards a better life’. One Woman and Circles in the Sky offer a vibrant and exceptional insight into the work of two of these distinctive artists, and will fill both the upper and lower galleries of the Wexford Arts Centre.
Both exhibitions will run in the upper and lower galleries of Wexford Arts Centre from Saturday 19th March to Saturday 9th April, and gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10am-5pm.
